Background

The Chittenden County Noise Map was created in February, 2005 using a computer model that takes into
account traffic volumes, average vehicle speeds, highway type, and roadway geometry as well as data that
describe terrain, building cover, and other factors. The traffic data was developed by RSG in 2004 as part
of the Chittenden Country Metropolitan Planning Organization's Travel Demand Model update.

This map indicates that 20% of homes in Chittenden County are located in areas where traffic noise can be a
"serious annoyance." In addition, the analyses show that 30% of homes are in areas where traffic noise can cause
sleep disturbance. People in those homes are exposed to traffic noise at or above an average daytime level of 55
decibels and nighttime levels of 45 dBA. These noise criteria were developed by the
World Health Organization.

Note: The map was created using the Cadna A modeling software made by
Datakustik, GMBH. The traffic volumes were developed using the TransCad
modeling software made by the Caliper Corporation. Residence locations, road centerlines, and town boundaries were made
available by the Vermont Center for Geographic Information.
Orthophotos were obtained from the USGS Terraserver and the
Vermont Mapping Program.
Mapping was done using ArcMAP made by ESRI.
