South Burlington, Vermont: Coordinated Traffic Signal Timing
Client: Chittenden County Metropolitan Planning Organization & City of South Burlington, Vermont
- Implemented and field-adjusted optimized signal timing plans for the am, pm, and Saturday peak periods at 12 intersections along two major commercial thoroughfares in South Burlington, Vermont
- Evaluated former (2007) and updated (2008) signal timing plans to reflect increased traffic volumes
- Demonstrated that the updated signal timing plan reduced the amount of fuel used during the AM and PM peak hours, resulting in a total annual cost savings of more than $9,500,000
- Demonstrated that the reduced peak hour fuel usage also reduced the amount of CO2 released into the environment-about 1.8 million pounds
